Itinerary
Today’s ride from Chiang Mai to Mae Sot at the border between Thailand and Myanmar is, although relatively long (360 kms.), an easy ride for which we can use the whole day. Much of it is on dual-lane highway, except for the last 80 kms. which will take us along a nice and winding road across the mountain range separating Mae Sot from the rest of Thailand.

Today, you will enter the Golden Land of Myanmar across the “ Good will “ bridge which links Thailand with Burma. For the first 45km, we will tackle the hard road and enjoy the rural landscape at ease.
After lunch,cross the Thanlwin (Salween) River for the first time as we continue to Thaton then head to Mawlamyine (Moulmein).
In Mawlamyine, we cross over the Salween River again as we take Burma’s longest bridge connecting the cities of Mottama and Mawlamyine.
Mawlamyine is Burma’s 3rd largest city and capital of Mon State. This charming and multicultural city lies at the mouth of the Salween River and was British Burma’s first capital from 1826 – 1852.
Enjoy a visit to the Kyaikthanlan Pagoda which the famous English writer Rudyard Kipling meant in his poem when he wrote: “By the old Moulmein pagoda lookin’ lazy at the sea.

After breakfast, we leave the city of Mawlamyine for a sightseeing trip to Mudon where a hug reclining Buddha is located. From here, keep driving northward and cross the Thanlwin Bridge again to reach Thaton, which was the capital of the former Thaton Mon Kingdom which ruled Lower Burma from the 9th – 11th century and stretched far into Thailand. Lunch at a local restaurant on the way.
The road from Thaton to Kyaikhtiyo is filled with rubber plantation and fascinating villages.

Spend your morning the explore the sacred pagoda of Golden Rock which is well-known as the first Buddhism pilgrimage site in Myanmar.
After that, kick off for a ride to Bago, also called Pegu and formerly known as Hanthawaddy . This city is located only 80 kms to the Northeast of Yangon. We visit the charming and characteristic monastery of Kya Khet Wai, an eminent teaching centre for hundreds of monks from neighbouring regions who come to study Buddhism and the over a thousand years old Shwemawdaw Pagoda with its spire taller than the Shwedagon Pagoda.

Today, we will take a car trip from Bago to Yangon, the former captical of Myanmar .
There are chances to photograph the portraits of Yangon old town as you walk from the famous Sule pagoda to Yangon river, passing some of the most prominent British colonial buildings as well lively markets. If you are passionate at a particular local experience, our guide will offer you a typical tea break near China town.
In the afternoon, discover the masterpiece of Yangon: the golden Shwedagon pagoda. There is so much to learn about Buddhism, local rite and architect at this pagoda. Take time to behold the sunset and wide view of Yangon city. Return to your hotel.

The destination of this day is Pyay (formerly called Prome), situated on the banks of the Ayeyarwaddy (Irrawaddy) River. Most of today’s drive takes us through vast plains made colourful with small villages and towns. Lunch is taken at a local restaurant on the way.
The long ride today is rewarded by the picturesque landscape along the river of Irrawaddy and mountainous spectaculars. En route, we will visit some of the most fascinating, remote village near Bagan.

Breakfast at the hotel. Today, a scenic overland journey leads us first to Mount Popa (approx. 50 kms.), an extinct volcano with a shrine dedicated to animist spirits known as “Nats”.
For the energetic – and if time allows it – there is the possibility to climb the 777 steps to the shrine at the top of the volcanic plug. Afterwards we continue our journey through pleasing landscape and local villages to Mandalay. Lunch at a local restaurant.

Breakfast at the hotel. In the morning we drive out of Mandalay to Amarapura to visit Mahagandayone Monastery, home to some 1.200 monks and one of the most prestigious monasteries in Myanmar. Afterwards, we will take a stroll over a historic bridge, known as U Bein Bridge, originally built in 1.851 entirely of teak wood and spanning over the Taungthaman Lake. Return to Mandalay for lunch at a local restaurant.

Breakfast at the hotel. Today’s ride promises to become very scenic as we head into the mountains and up to the high plateau of Southern Shan State. Lunch at a local restaurant on the way. In the afternoon we reach Nyaungshwe at the fabled Inle Lake.

Breakfast at the hotel. Inle Lake is a photographer’s dream as its calm waters are dotted with floating vegetation and fishing canoes, to which scenic high hills provide the perfect backdrop. We spend most of the day touring the lake by boat, passing endless floating gardens, where fruit and vegetables are grown and will observe the lake’s unique “leg rowers” – the Intha people row standing up with one leg wrapped around an oar. We visit Phaung Daw Oo Pagoda, the holiest religious site in southern Shan State and see traditional handicrafts – silk weaving on wooden handlooms and a blacksmith shop. Lunch at a local restaurant on the lake.

Breakfast at the hotel. Today’s ride takes us first up a steep mountain to Taunggyi, the capital of Southern Shan State. From there we ride into fantastic mountain scenery and on a road which until this year was forbidden for any foreign visitors.
We ride through spectacularly beautiful mountain scenery and through many ethnic minority villages, particularly of the Shan people. The road takes in Eastern direction and again across the Salween River which we had already encountered on our very first day in Burma more than 1.000 kms. further South. Simple lunch at a local restaurant on the way.

Kengtung is a lovely town built around a lake. We will have lunch after our arrival in Kengtung and then spend the afternoon exploring this charming little town.

Breakfast. Today’s drive is relatively short and takes us again through breathtakingly beautiful mountain scenery to Kengtung, the capital of Eastern Shan State. Kengtung is a lovely town built around a lake. We will have lunch after our arrival in Kengtung and then spend the afternoon exploring this charming little town.

Today’s drive is relatively short and takes us again through breathtakingly beautiful mountain scenery to Kengtung, the capital of Eastern Shan State. Kengtung is a lovely Breakfast at the hotel. We leave Kengtung in Southern direction and ride one more time through beautiful mountains and along a long valley to Tachilek and the Myanmar / Thai border which we reach before lunch. After customs / immigration procedures are terminated, we will have lunch on the Thai side at a restaurant which overlooks the bridge linking Burma with Thailand.
After lunch, a short drive of just over an hour takes us to Chiang Rai and our hotel for the night.

Breakfast at the hotel. Our last ride today is quite easy and follows the main road from Chiang Rai to Chiang Mai. As we will have plenty of time, we do not need to get up early and can make several stops on the way. We will visit Wat Rong Khun, a contemporary purely white temple with startling design. Inside the temple you will find astonishing paintings (they even include George Bush and Keanu Reeves) that “show an escape from the defilements of temptation to reach a supramundane state” – (sic: Wikipedia). The artist, Chalermchai Kositpipat also created the mural paintings at the Buddha Prateep Temple in London. Lunch at a local restaurant on the way.
We will reach Chiang Mai in the mid-afternoon.
