Emmanuel Baptist Church In Yangon

Emmanuel Baptist Church In Yangon

In the heart of lively Yangon and close to the Sule Pagoda you will find the large white beauty that is the Emmanuel Baptist Church.

History

It was built in 1885 and is one of the oldest places in the country.  It was, however, largely destroyed during the Second World War, and so the building that you can see today was mainly built in the early 1950s.
It is an interesting and impressive sight both from the outside, and if you step inside it is also just as attractive.  Built by an American Missionary, it has been an important site for Christians in Yangon for a great many years.  It is still used as a place of worship today, and Sunday services are held each week around 8.30am.

Visiting Guide

Whether you are religious or not, it is still one of the major places to see when visiting Yangon.  It is one of the city’s major landmarks and sits opposite to the equally interesting City Hall.  Indeed, it would be difficult not to spot the Emmanuel Baptist Church at least once when wandering around Yangon and taking in the sights.
Even if you are not able to go inside, if it is closed when you visit, it is still a very grand sight from the outside alone.  Brilliant white in colour and fairly simple in its design, it is a tall and commanding testament to faith and belief.  A large picture breaks the stark white façade.
